Microstructure Probe MSS 90DMH

The MSS90DMH is a version of the MSS90L which is more pressure resistant (2000m) and due to the weight, less vibration occurs.

Since the probe is designed to a depth of 2000m, it can be operated on up to 3000m long cable. Since the data over this length cannot be transmitted in the required speed (614,400 bit / sec), the probe is equipped with a fast memory (32GB). The records are stored at full scan speed. The data can be assigned by means of a time stamp. A reduced amount of data is transferred for monitoring. The data can be read out via the USB interface. The data can be read out via the USB interface.

The multiparameter probe is made for measuring micro-scale water stratification as well as the intensity of small scale turbulence in water down to approx. 2000 m.

The MSS90DMH profiler may be equipped with up to 9 different sensors mounted at the bottom cap .

The microstructure measuring system comprises the MSS profiler, a special winch, a probe interface and a data acquisition computer. The probe interface is adapted to the PC (laptop or desktop) via USB port.

Standard sensor equipment:

  • Pressure transducer

Description

Microstructure probe MSS90DMH

The MSS90DMH Profiler is an instrument for microstructure and precision measurements of physical parameters in marine and limnic waters. It is designed for vertical profiling within the upper 2000 m.

Microstructure investigation requires an undisturbed measuring procedure of the profiling instrument. Effects caused by cable tension (vibrations) and the ship’s movement have to be excluded by buoyancy driven free sinking of the MSS Profiler. This requires a slack in the cable near to the profiler. The loop in the cable is generated and kept during the profiling by immersing sufficient cable into the water.

For vertical sinking measurements, the profiler has to be balanced with a slightly negative buoyancy which gives it a sinking velocity in the range between 0.3 to 0.7 m/sec.

The profiler can be handled and recovered manually. For more convenient operation, special portable winches are available. The serial data is transmitted via electrical cable to an on board unit and further to a data acquisition PC. The on board unit generates the power supply for the profiler and the receiver of the data link. Raw data is stored online on the hard disc of the acquisition PC during the measuring process.

The basic hardware system for microstructure field measurements consists of several parts:
1. Microstructure profiler
2. Interface for power supply and data link to PC
3. Sea cable connection between interface and profiler
4. PC, Laptop or Notebook with USB-Interface
5. Winch (*) manual or electrical
(*) A winch is not necessarily required for system operation but makes the handling of the system during operation easier and more comfortable.

The measuring system can be powered either by mains (230VAC or 115VAC, standard version) or battery (12 VDC, option).

For data acquisition the high speed Micro-Structure Data Acquisition program MSDA is used. MSDA displays the received data and stores it on hard disk. Graphical functions enable a convenient operation of the system.

The sea cable has an almost neutral buoyancy and can carry weights of more than 50 kg. If the system is ordered without a winch, a cable drum with slip rings is provided for the transport of the sea cable. The cable is fitted with the proper underwater inline connector SUBCONN MCIL5F, locking sleeve SUBCONN MCDLSF and on the ship side with a LEMO 4-pole round connector. The cable drum is not intended to be used as hand winch, cable handling has to be made manually.

For more convenient operation, a special portable winch can be used. The data are transmitted via electrical cable to a board unit and further to a data acquisition PC. The on board unit comprises the power supply for the profiler and the receiver of the data link. The data are stored on the hard disc of the acquisition PC during the measuring process.
