The bottom indicator recognizes the sea floor in time during profiling. It helps avoiding damage to the sensors through ground contact. This ground warning device consists of a mobile magnet in the sensor and a reed contact in the bottom of the probe. During profiling the magnet is pressed against the spring tension by a weight on a cable and so kept away from the reed contact (normal operation condition is “open contact”). If the weight has floor contact the spring releases the tension and shifts the magnet towards the reed contact which is then closed by the magnetic field. The reed contact produces a digital signal, which is processed by the micro-controller.
