Proposal for a solar roof program for the Republic of the Seychelles

Based on the 2009 Zero Carbon Emission concept by the Seychelles Government which was followed up by a demonstration project for energy efficiency in private households Sea & Sun Technology GmbH (SST) will now use the dena Solar Roofs program to bring demonstrate the abilities of solar power to residential and institutional operators in Seychelles.

Project partners:

The Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena) - the German Energy Agency - is the

center of expertise for energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and intelligent

energy systems. dena's aim is to ensure that energy is used in both a national and

international context as efficiently, safely and economically as possible with the least

possible impact on climate. dena is working with stakeholders from the worlds of

politics and business and from society at large to achieve this aim. Shareholders in

dena are the Federal Republic of Germany, KfW Bankengruppe, Allianz SE, Deutsche

Bank AG and DZ BANK AG.

The initiative "renewables - Made in Germany" was launched by the German

Parliament in 2002 and is run by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

The main objective is to contribute to climate protection by stimulating the

acceptance and use of renewable energy around the world.  By showcasing

Germany's technical expertise in the field of renewable energy and by organizing

business trips to and from Germany, the export initiative facilitates business contacts

between companies in Germany and abroad. The platform www.renewables- provides information about German renewable energy

technologies and contact data of German suppliers.

The “dena Solar Roofs Programme” was developed by the Deutsche Energie-

Agentur GmbH (dena) – the German Energy Agency. Launched in 2004, this

programme, co-financed by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology,

supports German solar energy companies entering new markets. Within the

framework of the programme reference and demonstration projects are installed on

the roofs of designated institutions in different countries around the world. The

installation is accompanied by comprehensive marketing and training programmes.

These projects impressively present high-quality solar technology. An opening

ceremony and a kick-off press conference will be held, since this is considered a very

effective marketing on the Seychelles. These will be announced through posters,

flyers, press releases and direct contacts. Customers are provided the University, the

SIT and several private homes, since they work as good multipliers and spur the

development of PV systems in the Seychelles on. As part of the installation of the first

plants there will be product and installation trainings, so that in the future, only the

installation materials has to be delivered and work force must be provided on site

doing the installation. To keep interested parties up to date, there will be a Micro

website on the homepage of Sea & Sun Technology, which documents the current data on the yield of the plants and the further development of the project and

provides at selected locations, displays that document the current yield be made to

arouse interest and to inform. In the future the income and further developments

should be made known through press releases in the annual / milestone distance.

Sea & Sun Technology is a company from northern part of Germany working in the

field of maritime measurement systems and renewable energies. e3plan is

established in the market as a consultant and engineering company in energy

technologies and renewable energies. For covering the market in Seychelles it is

planned to establish a local company called Sea & Sun Technologies Seychelles. The

local firm will serve the islands with installation-, service- and financing solutions.

Project description:

The project is designed to install a total capacity of 20kWp of solar power. Five 2 kWp-systems will be installed on domestic households and two 5kWp-systems will got to the University of Seychelles and the Seychelles Institute of Technologies. The solar-roof-program includes a marketing campaign to introduce the technology to the target market.

First steps for this project have been done 2 years ago. Now Sea & Sun Technology and e3plan gmbh have already started -financially supported through the dena- with product and installation trainings. The installation of the 7 PV-systems will follow in October and November. Five 2 kWp-systems will be installed on private houses and two 5 kWp-systems on the Seychelles Institute of Technology (SIT) and a hotel on Cerf Island. SST plans to operate the systems in self ownership for one year through our local firm and then sell them to the owners. The price of the systems for the clients shall include a grant from the Seychelles government. The total costs for the installation amounts to 800.000 SCR. We would like to request to subsidize the final price for the costumers by a 50% grant through the Seychelles government.

There should be a yield of 1900kWh/kWp saving 0,65 Kg CO2/kWh meaning – 24.700 Kg/a of CO2 through the yearly production of 38.000 kWh.

  1. The owners: They pay only once for the system and have a minimum of 20 years of electricity production.
  2. The PUC: Reducing peak load demand and stabilizing the grid by spread power production.
  3. The local business: Establish a local business with high skilled employees working in the field of renewable energies. Create a sustainable business by offering services for maintenance and after sales.
  4. The environment: Every kWh produced by renewable energies reduces the demand of the import of fossil fuel and makes Seychelles more independent from oil.

The contribution of SST is to forward their knowledge in renewable energies, they finance most of the marketing and installation. The project plan intends to do product and installation trainings by the end of October then subsequent installation of the first 7 PV-systems followed by an opening ceremony and press work.
